What makes it Great?

Why it doesn't work?

Located between the Carnegie and Hillman Libraries and directly across from the Cathedral of Learning, Schenley Plaza is Oakland's green oasis. Used as a parking lot for decades, the five-acre Schenley Plaza was restored to its intended use by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and its community partners in 2006. A second phase of the Plaza's revitalization, the restoration of the Mary Schenley Memorial Fountain, was completed in 2008. Future plans for the site include the restoration of the Magee Memorial Fountain in front of the Carnegie Library, and a full-service restaurant in the Plaza's northwest corner.

Access & Linkages

Schenley Plaza is located in the Oakland business district of Pittsburgh, and neighbors the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. The Plaza is accessibly by major bus routes and is surrounded by surface parking. It also features paved sidewalks throughout the park to enhance park users ability to move about the space. With an open landscape, the plaza is a green oasis in the center of Oakland.

Comfort & Image

Located three miles east of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the vibrant green of Schenley Plaza is a striking contrast to the Oakland business district. Plaza patrons enjoy laying on the "Emerald Lawn" or sitting beneath the white tent with the provided chairs and tables. The Plaza offers 24-hour security and daily maintenance providing clean, wheel-chair accessible restrooms. While the actual Plaza is free from cars, surface parking is a close walk.

Uses & Activities

The Plaza's features include: ´ Four dining kiosks offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner ´ Free public entertainment throughout the season ´ The PNC Carousel, the Plaza's feature family attraction ´ Movable chairs and caf_ tables ´ A tented area for shade ´ Unlimited free wireless internet access

Sociability

Schenley Plaza is a relaxed public place for socializing in groups or singly. It has been used as a meeting place and as a venue for public events.
