Lenticular shaped main street in the historical center of Kosice.Several blocks long. \nURLS:\n www.kosice.sk - there is an English language link.
Anchored by St. Elizabeth Cathedral, the eastern most gothic cathedral in Europe, and the state theatre. Beautifully restored historical buildings from many periods, pedestrian-only area. Wide variety of retail stores, at least one grocery store, several churches, government buildings, tourist information center, two town squares, cafes and restaurants, an archeological site, a musical fountain and museums.
It is the center of the historic area, the adjoining side streets and alleys are well integrated with the center. Close to public transport, this is a pedestrian only area. Sidewalks are a great walking surface and it is very easy to get from place to place.
Very clean, well kept up. All streets seem to lead to this place and it is stunning to see. The only vehicles are service vehicles, including the occasional maintenance and police patrols. Very safe and welcoming feeling.
The range of activities is great; shopping, church services, work, restaurants, strolling, visiting historic sites. All ages are found here, men and women equally. Special events take place here throughout the year - outdoor concerts, seasonal celebrations, cultural events, Europe's oldest marathon, artisans sales, historical reenactments.
This area is very sociable, a fun place to be. Locals are obviously proud of the area. Tourism is increasing, but locals predominate, making it more enjoyable and "real" for visitors. There is a lot here to keep both locals and visitors interested and wanting to return often. You can get by speaking English here. People are welcoming.
I stayed in Kosice for 3 days in mid-October, 2009. Visited the Hlavna morning, afternoon and evening. Even in cold and rainy weather, outside the busy season, this was a lovely place to be.
