Fountain Square is a public plaza in the heart of Downtown. Everything in Downtown Cincinnati revolves around the Square and has since 1871. Since the completion of its renovation in many shops, restaurants, and bars have opened around the square since its and helped spur an Urban Renaissance in Cincinnati. There is always an event going on at Fountain Square, from Movie Night, to Salsa Night to its biggest event Oktoberfest the Square is where life happens in Cincinnati.
The Square is very accessible from anywhere in Cincinnati. It is only a block from Government Square Transit Center, there is a public parking garage below the square, and most importantly it is accessible to all pedestrians with many points of entry. The square is elevated above street level, which separates people from the noise of the street and creates an urban oasis. Because the rise in elevation the Square has steps and ramps that make the entire plaza usable to all people.
The Square has an open airy feeling, but has different areas which create atmospheres. The closer to the street the more lively the Square is, but as you move away from the street it becomes serene and relaxing. The Square is very well maintained by Fountain Square Management Group LLC. They keep the park clean, safe, and active. They are responsible for the numerous events that happen on the square daily.
Fountain Square is used daily by downtown workers, residents, and visitors. There are many different activities that happen on the Square, from eating lunch, to live music, to demonstrations, to playing chess. Restaurants use the space for outdoor seating, and a focal point from all angles.
Fountain Square is really one of the most defining monuments of the City of Cincinnati. It is an area of great pride and fond memories for countless residents. It is the social forum of the city. It is used for active and passive activities and quite often at the same time, and is ever evolving day after day.
The Tyler Davidson Fountain (The fountain that makes it Fountain Square) was donated by a prominant business man in memory of his brother in-law "To The People of Cincinnati" and has been one of the most popular places in Cincinnati ever since.
