City park http://phoenix.gov/PARKS/civicprk.html
Civic Space park is a 2 block long and 1 block wide park on the Northern edge of the business district of Phoenix, Arizona. The park is 2.7 acres. To the East of the space is the Arizona State University Campus. It features multiple large shade structures with Solar panels above them. It includes the restored historic A.E. England Motors building which has a public community room on the top floor. The building also contains a coffee shop, a small clothing retailer and restrooms. Adjacent to the coffee shop is a sunken eating area with movable chairs and tables and vibrantly lit water walls. The park also features light pillars that change colors, an interactive splash pad, chess and game tables. The parks most prominent feature is the huge illuminated net sculpture "Her Secret Is Patience" by Janet Echelman that floats above the center of the park. There are future plans when funds become available to rehab the Historic Post Office that sits North of the park and turn it into a Student Union for the ASU campus.
The park has light rail lines on either side of it and sits directly north the Central Bus and rail station in Phoenix. The Taylor Street Pedestrian Mall connects to the park on the East side and runs through ASUs Downtown Campus. This mall connects the Park to the Arizona Center, the largest retail area in downtown Phoenix. There is no vehicle parking at or adjacent to the park, its only accessible by foot, bike or transit.
The park is very well maintained and features abundant green grass (a sometimes rare amenity in this desert city). There is always a security guard at the park keeping it safe and litter-free.
The park is used perhaps most heavily by ASU students to study, play games, play music, etc. Its also used for nearby office workers on their lunch breaks. The park also features a movies in the park series and hosts a huge variety of events in the AE England buildings community room. The park is also just 1 block south of the Historic Westward Ho Hotel which is now HUD housing for Seniors and the Seniors in their motorized wheelchairs are often seen buzzing through the park. The park is very nearby the Downtown Phoenix Public Market and on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the market is open many people will take the meals they bought at the market and enjoy them in the park.
The park is most used by locals and ASU students (although there are some tourists visiting from hotels a few blocks away). As its main downtown park, the space has become a point of Civic Pride for Phoenix. Its monumental public art piece will likely become strongly associated with Phoenix much like Chicago's famous "Bean".
Civic Space Park opened April, 2009. Over 70% of the park will be shaded when trees meet maturity. Hard surfaces made with permeable concrete and pavement designed to reduce heat reflection and allow rainfall to seep through, reducing damaging storm runoff. -A student created piece about the park can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vAX9dxmk3o&feature=related -Here is a video specifically about the "Her Secret is Patience" piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rwy6IS0cHo
