A long street closed to partially closed to traffic on Fridays and Sundays <br> URLS: http://www2.pps.org/news/one-entry?entry_id=77745 http://www.bogota.gov.co/decide.php?patron=1.03020105
What makes is special is the interaction between strolling, biking, skating citizens, which is permitted when cars are banned from the large sections of the street on Fridays and Sundays.
The street becomes a large sidewalk and the result is a very carnivalesque atmosphere.
There are men, women, children, grandparents, dogs...it is unlike any other space I have seen.
Every Friday evening people stroll 7th avenue (la Septima) during an event called "The Septimazo" - and on Sundays (and holidays, I should mention), 7th avenue has a 10+ mile stretch that becomes the "Ciclovia" - a large cycling route where cars are forbidden but other types of weekend "commuters" (walkers, skaters, etc.) are welcomed.
The mood is very sporty and festive. There is no "road rage" because there is room for everyone and there are people hired by the city to keep things orderly.
The PPS website has a story on the Ciclovia, but I would like to nominate 7th avenue because it also is home to the Septimazo, on Fridays.
