ORLANDO - AAA is re-branding itself the American Amblers Association to reflect its changing role in helping people enjoy the nation's parks, playgrounds, public markets and greenways. Its new logo is a stylized rendering of three pairs of legs, each forming an “A”
The re-branding of North America's largest motoring organization comes in response to Americans' declining automobile use and greater appreciation for hometown attractions, said AAA President Robert L. Darbelnet.
"Triple A has always respected the rights of pedestrians in properly marked crosswalks and now we'd like to climb out of our cars and join them," said Darbelnet, addressing a lakeside press conference at Lake Eola Park in Orlando. Many AAA branch offices have converted their parking lots into town squares, where citizens can engage in social and civic functions.
To show AAA's commitment to return the streets to the people, Darbelnet announced challenge grants of $100,000 to any city that reduces the number of downtown parking spaces by 20 percent in a single year.
Membership in Triple-A has been declining for years as Americans choose to spend their leisure dollars differently. AAA has stopped publishing highway maps and discontinued its emergency towing service. Its latest guidebook "America's Most Underrated Parks" has become a surprise best-seller. It rates parks on a scale of one-to-five fountains scale according to cleanliness, variety of activities, seasonal events, quality of food vendors, accessibility, appearance and overall ambiance.
