Through a Community Placemaking Grant supported by GM, Austin Parks Foundation and Project for Public Spaces partnered with City of Austin’s Park and Recreation Department and Amigos de Parque Zaragoza to revitalize a former parking lot at Parque Zaragoza, a historic gathering place in Austin's Mexican-American community.
Listening sessions with residents pointed to a clear desire for youth-focused programming, spurring the creation of Austin's first "traffic garden"—a painted biking track designed to teach children street safety on the underutilized lot adjacent to the park's recreation center. The project attracted $50,000 in additional funding from Austin Parks Foundation, and the collective effort successfully transformed the space into a safe, vibrant hub for learning and play for all ages.
