Centrally located in downtown Farmington, Arkansas, Farmington Public Library is looking to turn its underused lawn into a community hub for outdoor activities and programming. The library is currently used by local residents from local neighborhoods, daycares, schools, senior centers, and businesses. The library is in a small building, where the spaces have reached their capacity for hosting a jam-packed community calendar for year-round programming.
With a Community Placemaking Grant, the library will turn its nearly half acre of lawn into an outdoor community space. Although the space is occasionally used for seasonal events, it is generally underused. The Library is looking forward to making it a more functional and permanent outdoor venue and gathering place. Through the Placemaking process, we will envision how this empty space can become a destination for the library to expand its programming, invite new partners, and welcome community members.
In November 2024, Project for Public Spaces’ Placemaking team started working with Farmington Public Library, one of three Northwest Arkansas grantees, to organize visioning sessions with their respective communities, before conceptualizing an activation plan, designing, construction, and programmatic implementation. Projects are expected to be completed by October 2025.
