Research Internship: Healthy Places

Project for Public Spaces seeks a research intern for Healthy Places for Summer 2019 (June-August).

This internship is part-time, and successful applicants will be paid a stipend.

Healthy Places: In 2016 PPS released The Case for Healthy Places—a report of peer-reviewed research that offers evidence-based guidance, recommendations, and case studies to which health institutions, community organizations, and other partners can refer in order to create and support healthy placemaking initiatives. This important study focuses on five key areas: Social Support & Interaction; Play & Active Recreation; Green & Natural Environments; Healthy Food; and Walking & Biking.

Internship Tasks, will include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct literature reviews documenting contributions and identifying opportunities for further research.  
  • Refresh, summarize and update PPS publications for distribution online to our global audience.
  • Propose and create new tools for communities to support online resources.
  • Research and conduct data (quantitative and qualitative) analysis of economic and social outcomes
  • Assist with site visits and conducting interviews of case studies across the country.
  • Refresh, summarize and update PPS publications, including articles and blogs for distribution online to our global audience.

Desired Qualifications:

The internship requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent communication (written and verbal), research, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates should have a strong interest in and understanding of urban planning, healthy communities, and/or Placemaking issues.

For the Healthy Places internship, prior experience conducting literature reviews addressing pressing issues at the intersection of health and the built environment including (but not limited to) Social Support & Interaction; Play & Active Recreation; Green & Natural Environments; Healthy Food; and Walking & Biking is highly desirable.

High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office, keynote, google suite, web based data and information platforms is required for this position. Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud is desirable but not mandatory.
