Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community Program, Burnside Park, Providence 2013 Pilot Project

The Imagination Center, Burnside Park, Providence, RI (Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community 2013 pilot project)

It’s an exciting week here at Project for Public Spaces! After another successful year of reimagining public spaces in communities around the country, we are ready to begin accepting applications for the 2016 Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community grant program.

Southwest Airlines connects people to the places that mean the most to them. In 2014, Southwest launched Heart of the Community to encourage more connections on the ground and to help residents feel a sense of ownership in the places they share. This community-driven program has supported the activation of public spaces in cities across the country, from Portland, Maine, to San Antonio, Texas. These projects have brought new life to vacant or underutilized areas and they have shown Placemaking to be a powerful tool for transforming their public spaces into vital places that highlight local assets, spur rejuvenation and serve common needs.

2016 will be a pivotal year for this program. As the Placemaking movement continues to grow, these projects are becoming part of much larger discussions about people’s connection to place and to each other. We are currently accepting applications for 2016 projects through October 16, 2015If you are passionate about Placemaking and have a project that meets our criteriaplease fill out the form on our FAQ page to request your application materials.
