A Public Markets Program Initiative

Market Cities Initiative

Despite the benefits that public markets bring to people, cities, and their economies, they are endangered by uninformed development and modernization efforts, a lack of support for minority entrepreneurs, and a lack of management capacity, among other challenges. To ensure the survival of these valuable civic assets, a handful of communities have created policy, governance, and investment strategies to enhance their public market networks.

Working in partnership with HealthBridge Foundation of Canada and Slow Food International, the Market Cities Initiative will accelerate the adoption of these Market City strategies through research on best practices for municipalities, states, provinces, and civic sector entities that seek to support networks of public markets in their region.
