After turning down an under-used, deteriorating park for a $5 million makeover, the Salt Lake Olympics Committee (SLOC) set its sights on making unwelcome changes to one of Salt Lake City's best-loved public spaces. Gallivan Center has drawn crowds for the past decade with its public art, skating rink, performance stage, and variety of places to sit and eat, think, and people watch. Now it's slated to morph into into an "Olympic Legacy Park," in an improvement project akin to marring a beautiful face with layers of pancake makeup.
It's a shame that Salt Lake City didn't graciously decline SLOC's offer.
A 45-foot arch, reflecting pool, 100-foot tower, and other elements will impose an Olympics "theme" onto a place that already has an identity as the city's "outdoor living room." For PPS, these changes are especially disappointing. "We worked with the community for a year to develop the kind of place that they wanted," said PPS Vice-President Steve Davies. "For a single committee to impose its own vision is outrageous."
A key controversy centers on enlarging the concert stage (especially given noise complaints about current events); another is the strings attached to SLOC's $5 million "gift": the City will have to chip in up to $5 million in taxpayer dollars for additional improvements.
Basically, SLOC is handing Salt Lake City a bogus savings coupon to buy something it doesn't need - and ruin something it loves. It's a shame that Salt Lake City didn't graciously decline SLOC's offer - or persuade it to create a true Olympic legacy by transforming the aforementioned Pioneer Park into a place that's as successful as Gallivan Center.
