What makes it Great?

Why it doesn't work?

Situated on the Potomac River, Old Town is a real mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly community, offering housing, public parks, and many shops and restaurants. Located within its traditional cobblestone streets are numerous historic buildings, including Gadsby's Tavern and Robert E. Lee's boyhood home.

Access & Linkages

Old Town Alexandria is a mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented community that is accessible by the METRO. Where there is heavy foot traffic, the streets are narrower and focus on the needs of pedestrians.

Comfort & Image

An area that is very clean and safe.

Uses & Activities

Residential, commercial, retail, and recreational structures exist within this three- to four-block downtown area.

Sociability

Market Square at City Hall is a space that encourages sociability, and serves as a meeting place for couples and small groups. The farmers market on Saturday mornings brings together all sorts of different people from the area.
