Spread This Idea

Where

Olmos Park Dam

My idea to improve this place

Put an outdoor rock climbing wall in that area or Put rock climbing holds along the dam .

So that people could...

achieve greater fitness, gain greater appreciation for the dam, gain greater appreciation for the historic neighborhoods surrounding the dam, and become introduced and excited about the sport of rock climbing.

Because I want San Antonio to be...

a city of healthy people, as described by the SA2020 initiative. I want San Antonio to be described by other cities as innovative in its use of space and development of recreational activities for its people. And I want San Antonio to be enthusiastic about rock climbing.

People visiting this idea should look at the first link after the description. The Excalibur outdoor climbing tower in the Netherlands is a major tourist destination for climbing enthusiasts because of its novelty and uniqueness. The more dramatic an experience that can be made for this Olmos dam idea, the more curiosity will be created by it to the extent that outsiders will venture to the site to experience it.

Intriguing. The dam is used only for flood control, so the 45 foot high back of the dam is usually dry. But Public Works hasn't considered it "public" space, even though runners, graffiti artists and dog walkers are down there all the time. The FRONT of the dam is another big area that is always public space, south facing wall, and totally unused land area between the dam and the road. Climbers could park safely under the 281 structure just on the opposite side of the road. Intriguing.
