Providence's Office of Cultural Affairs is tiny - headed up by two people and mainly staffed by volunteers - but its role in revitalizing the city has been huge. The annual Convergence Festival, unfolding in the parks, plazas and streets of Providence this month, has received international attention for its presentation of large-scale public sculpture and its impact on the local economy. With the participation of hundreds of international, national, and local artists, Convergence helps demystify the art experience by bringing the museum, the theater, and the music hall into the public arena.
This year, during its 25th anniversary, the Office of Cultural Affairs is enjoying recognition for having helped Providence rise again as a livable, desirable city. We've engaged Bob Rizzo to share some of the wisdom and experience gained by creating Convergence and other OCA programs and activities. He'll take your questions on the logistics, the relationships, the funding, the volunteers - and the rewards, of course! - in turning public places into showplaces for the arts.
