The former ASARCO site, under development for a public park and restaurant, was the original site of the Lewis and Clark landing, the bicentennial of which will be celebrated in 2004. It is also the former site of a lead refinery. This was recently remediated, but the process involved capping of contaminants and therefore restricts development options. Special pavement and stone blocks already have been installed (see photo for Site B). The restaurant, at the southern end of this area, is the only restaurant in development to serve the other sites.
The photo at right shows the view north across ASARCO site. NPS site is near silo; the planned pedestrian bridge would span high over the river from its landing near the crane. The Gallup site is at the river bend. The State of Iowa lies to the right.
