The Place Poll

New Nominations from Great Public Spaces

From small community gardens to world-famous boulevards, Great Public Spaces recognizes places that best embody the PPS principles of placemaking. "The Place Poll" is a forum for Making Places subscribers to voice their opinion on newly nominated places. Just click on the link for each nominee to view the full write-up and post your comments. Your input will help decide whether or not these nominees are truly great public spaces! (Note: the descriptions below were submitted by website users and do not necessarily represent the position of Project for Public Spaces.)

Markets

North Union Farmers Market, Shaker Square, Cleveland, OH
"Located in the heart of historic Shaker Square, the North Union Farmers Market features farm-fresh products from Ohio's fertile lands.
Seasonal fruits and vegetables are supplemented with organic pork, grass fed beef, eggs, organic poultry and dairy products from Amish farmers. Cooking demonstrations, knife sharpening, and juried artisans add color and flavor to every lively market day."

Arlington Farmers Market, Courthouse and 14th St., Arlington, VA
"The tents of this 25-year-old market, staffed by hard-working agriculturists and spilling over with colorful bounty, present a stark contrast to
the high-rise government and commercial office buildings that surround it."

Streets

Charles Bridge, Spanning the river between Old Town and Mala Strana, Prague, Czech Republic
"By day it's packed with tourists and vendors selling cheaply made and overpriced souvenirs.
But at dawn, dusk or during the night, the bridge is a wonderful place to see fantastic views of a beautiful city and to meet tourists and locals alike."

Las Vegas Boulevard/The Strip, Las Vegas, NV
"Always an active and fascinating place to be. Features an artificial harbor with a pirate and man 'o war battle every hour, an active
volcano, a four-acre lake with a massive fountain display, a replica of the Eiffel tower and Venice."

Parks

Chrissy Field, Northern Bayside Shoreline, San Francisco, CA
"Outstanding promenade with one of the great views in the world: the Golden Gate of San Francisco Bay. Historical buildings, play spaces,
natural estuary restored last year, various activity spaces."

Mount Royal Park, Camillien-Houde Drive and Remembrance Road, Montreal, Canada
"Heavily used year-round by walkers, ice skaters, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, bird watchers, tobagganers and miniature sailboat enthusiasts. It is also a place for cultural events including concerts and art exhibitions."

Buildings

Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 NE 80th Street, Redmond, WA
"The restoration of this historic high school for recreation, community service and gathering spaces, in conjunction with the construction
of a new elementary school and related facilities, has provided the catalyst for revitalization of a diverse and economically challenged neighborhood and a focal point for renewed and expanded community involvement."

Prospect Park Audubon Center, Prospect Park, Brooklyn , NY
"The landmarked 1905 Prospect Park Boathouse has been renovated and turned into the nation's first urban Audubon Center. The Center
emphasizes environmental education for a large underserved urban population, focusing on the diverse wildlife and habitats of park designers Olmsted and Vaux's Prospect Park."

Hall of Shame

PPG Plaza, Between Third and Fourth Avenues, downtown Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA
"PPG Plaza is nothing more than a sidewalk on steroids, with all the charm therein. Designed by
celebrity architect Phillip Johnson as part of his suite of several glass-turreted PPG buildings, it is a desolate space you are prone to cross quickly, in an effort to limit your time spent there."

Keiner Plaza, Market and 4th Street, St. Louis, MO
"This place features paths that go nowhere in particular, on a two-block by one-block rectangle of land. It also features an
under-utilized amphitheatre without sufficient cover from the hot summer sun, and two fountains whose water has bright aqua dye."
