MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTS

Mixed-use developments have brought new forms to downtowns. Downtowns were traditionally arranged around a skeleton of streets and sidewalks. The new developments often consist of indoor retail malls, skywalks which bridge across streets on upper floors, parking garages at the street level and plazas around entrances.

These new elements in the urban form occasionally can be disorienting or may unintentionally inhibit pedestrian circulation.
