About the project

Littleton is a community of some 6,000 people, located in the Western White Mountains of Northern New Hampshire. We’re widely recognized as a regional industrial, economic and retail center. We’re proud of our strong business and employment base, a growing collection of national, regional and local retailers, and a thriving, award-winning Main Street, which has been described as the kind of Main Street people envision when they think about small, New England villages. Our long and solid tradition of innovation and community involvement have helped us achieve regional success and earn recognition by a noted author as the 9th Best Small Town in America.

In late 2002, the Federal Highway Administration agreed to fund, through its Transportation and Community and Systems Preservation Pilot Program (TCSP), a major reconstruction of Littleton's Main Street, which just happens to be part of U.S. Route 302. While the ultimate result of the project will be a new and improved Main Street, equally important, according to the plan, is a strong community involvement component. We tapped Project for Public Spaces (PPS) to spark that community participation, using their broad expertise in planning and their unique placemaking process.

Placemaking began in Littleton in March 2003, and is looking at several areas within town, and how they might interrelate. More than 100 residents, businessowners, students and outside resources have taken part in the process, and teams are working on specific ideas and plans that can be put into place. Folks from neighboring towns and state agencies have been part of the process, and are learning how they can create better places where they live and work.

This Website serves the teams and the larger public, including citizens, businessowners, former residents, tourists and others interested in the town or in the process. It’s a place to meet, discuss and track the project, and a platform for a broader community site in the future.

The project draws on the resources of PPS, a Littleton-based steering committee, a project team, community teams and the public. Other partners include:
