Renee Espiau

Senior Associate

Renee Espiau is a Senior Associate at the Project for Public Spaces.  Renee is an Urban Planner with a diverse background in transportation policy and planning.  She is an advocate for incorporating Smart Growth, context-sensitive, and multimodal strategies into transportation and community development projects.

Renee is currently involved in a number of projects including, but not limited to, PPS’s “Building Community through Transportation” campaign; mixed-use downtown and waterfront redevelopment plans; and the review and design of transportation facilities both in the US and abroad. She is also active in creating programming and management plans for public plazas throughout North America and is an instructor for PPS’s “Streets as Places” training program.

Before coming to PPS, Renee was a project manager at the New Jersey Department of Transportation, planning transportation projects from their inception through to design. She also has experience in waterfront planning, having helped to create a comprehensive plan for the South Bronx waterfront for the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance. Renee also has extensive research and writing experience, having worked as a research assistant at the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy & Management.

Renee is originally from Maui, Hawaii, where she developed an interest in planning and transportation by observing the infrastructure challenges precipitate by constant and sprawling development.
