Shame on You: Queens Boulevard
Want to make a dangerous intersection safer? Here's how not to do it.
Our new "Shame on You" feature highlights especially egregious examples of bad practices and bad public spaces. For our inaugural installment, we're singling out the intersection of Queens Boulevard and 71st Avenue in the borough of Queens, New York. In 2003, five pedestrians were killed on Queens Boulevard, and 85 have been killed since 1993. What sets this intersection apart is the ghastly signage New York City DOT has installed. Is this what passes for improvements to pedestrian safety?
Registered users of the PPS Image Database can view a short slide show with illustrative examples of this shameful place.
Pedestrians are asked to stay alert, but drivers haven't had to make concessions: The streets and crosswalks are just as wide as they've always been.
