Why It Works

The Centre is a vibrant venue for a huge range of New Zealand made art and crafts, shopping, education and entertainment. With over 40 specialty shops, fine art galleries, world-class theatre, art house cinemas, bars, restaurants and cafes, a bustling weekend Art, Craft and Produce Market, and an array of festivals and special events throughout the year, this former site of the University of Canterbury is an award winning tourist attraction that embraces and supports the arts in New Zealand.

We visit the Arts Centre on most visits to Christchurch as it is an evolving and entertaining centre for arts as well as community gatherings. Various friends lived and worked there on films, videos, music, writing and other art projects. The ever-changing light makes it a photographer's paradise. The places to eat feature local foods and the tiny coffee and specialty food shops are excellent. Some of the stone masons for this place, the Cathedral and other Gothic stone buildings in the city were my husband's family and the sixth generation (Tait) is now working at the same trade thanks to a continued apprenticeship program and artisan support. The Centre is an excellent example of adaptive reuse, making the space work for the community and just plain Kiwi ingenuity! It's a delight!
