Market Square - Winnipeg
Submitted by: nicole rouire
A market that stretches over a couple of city blocks in an old downtown neighborhood.
Market Square is located in Downtown Winnipeg. The area is full of old brick buildings that host a variety of businesses, antique shops, coffee shops, restaurants, specialty clothing stores and pubs. The architecture makes for beautiful scenery. There is an outdoor market theatre, where plays and shows are regularly shown (in the summer anyway). This area hosts many festivals, including the Annual Fringe Festival, celebrating theatre and drama. It is apparently a dead ringer for Chicago, and a new favorite among film makers. This area is currently in the developing stage and still requires a great deal of work. I guarantee it will become one of the great markets of Canada.
What Makes Market Square - Winnipeg a Great Place?
It is settled downtown, in between the business district and Chinatown, and is the new location for the college campus. The blocks are short and sweet, which allows pedestrians to take a variety of paths. It is accessible by transit, auto or on foot.
As mentioned before, this area is still in the development stage. Many of the old buildings have been restored, or are undergoing renovations. Many of the old warehouses are being turned into luxurious condos. The buildings and atmosphere give a feeling of connection with the past. There are many people out and about in the area, which contributes to a feeling of safety.
This area hosts a variety of festivals. Users vary in age. Young people love the used clothing stores, pubs, and coffee shops. Professionals, both young and old, frequent the antique shops, restaurants and specialty stores. By day or night, the area is filled with many market-goers.
The mood is relaxed, yet busy. It is a great place to stroll, window shop, go for lunch, or maybe catch a play.
