Why It Works
The Eiffel Tower’s best effect is that it radiates out over both sides of the Seine for quite a distance. With no skyscrapers in central Paris (except for the dreadful Tour Montparnasse), the Tower is a kind of compass, a landmark that is identifiable from almost any neighborhood in the city. Not only is it a great icon, but it is also an intensely active space at the base, on the Tower itself, and in the parks and streets that surround it. Catching a glimpse of the Tower from afar is a thrill, but its influence on the immediate surroundings is even more impressive.
