Why It Works

We loved the wonderful quiet and comfortable quality of this ramblas. Its effect is one that immediately slows your pace, allowing you to observe the numerous people just relaxing and enjoying themselves (an activity at which the locals excel). It also has glorious architectural bookends: the Sagrada Familia and the Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau.

When visiting Barcelona, we strolled on such streets as the Ramblas, the Passeig de Gracia, and through the Barri Gotic, but no boulevard was quite as enchanting as the Avinguda de Gaudi. Flanked on one side by the triumphant Sagrada Familia, the greatest ongoing work of architecture in the world, and on the other side by the magnificent Hospital de Santa Creu, the street gives off a magnificent atmosphere, while remaining much less touristy than the Ramblas or many other streets.
