After 25 years of work on neglected public spaces, we continue to hear from people who tell us that they are feeling a loss of community. They feel a lack of control over the changes taking place in their public environments and a loss of connection to them. People have talked to us about the dearth of places that are comfortable to use, about streets that are too wide to cross without being endangered by traffic, parks that lack amenities, buildings that alienate people because they are not human in scale. PPS believes that communities should drive projects rather than projects driving communities.
