Opinions Sought on Pleasant Street Parking Lot Experiment
November 14, 2004

Complete this survey after testing the back-in angled parking in the Pleasant Street Lot
Last week, engineers re-striped a section of the parking lot on the north side of Pleasant Street, just above Main Street. The re-striping was done to allow residents, business people and visitors to try back-in angled parking, something that has been used in locations across the country, and was proposed as a way to bring added parking to Littleton’s Main Street.

The re-striping is part of an experiment designed to get user feedback about the parking, and how it compares with parallel parking, which will continue to be used on most of Main Street, and front-in angled parking.

Survey forms will be left on cars that use the back-in angled parking. Additionally, forms will be available at www.LittletonPlaces.org. Four respondents will be selected from those submitted by December 15, 2004 and will receive a gift certificate to the business of their choice on Main Street.

The parking experiment is funded as part of the Federal Highway Administration grant that supported construction planning and community engagement in Littleton, Meredith, Berlin, Gorham, Chocorua and other parts of the State, and that funded development of a new Master Plan for the Town of Littleton.

I do not want to see any type of diagonal parking. 1) The main street is currently wide enough to allow for emergency vehicles to travel down the middle of the roadway, when the the street is busy. With the current parking, it is close to being a five lane roadway.
2) Place a pickup truck on your left and try to pull out into the roadway. Most people will not be able to see over the hood or cab of the truck to see if the roadway is clear of oncoming traffic.
3) Why did the town remove diagonal parking to begin with? I suspect that it was found not to be a safe way of parking and to enlarge to roadway. Backing out into traffic when you can not see, isn't safe either.
