Places: Greenwich Street
Greenwich Street is a North-South connector, extending from Battery Park at Manhattan’s southern tip to West 12th Street in the West Village, and running parallel to West Street (Route 9A). From Battery Park to Liberty Street, where it meets the WTC site, Greenwich Street is one-way northbound; north of the WTC site, at Barclay Street, it is two-way. This upper stretch is characterized by a neighborhood/residential feel, as well as several educational institutions (including P.S. 234, Stuyvesant High School, and the Borough of Manhattan Community College) located along or near it. Proposals for rebuilding 7 World Trade Center offer the the possibility of reconnecting Greenwich Street across the WTC site, in order to partially restore the street grid that existed before the World Trade Center was built. Greenwich Street presents many opportunities to develop more diversified uses of space, including residential, cultural, retail, and restaurants. There are also opportunities to make Greenwich Street more of a complement to West Street, whose reconstruction will likely include more open public space and/or a promenade.
