Progressive public policy has made Vancouver, Canada the benchmark on livability – photo by Paul Krueger

Earlier this year, when we announced a call for proposals for the 2016 Pro Walk/Pro Bike/Pro Place Conference, we had no idea we’d break all of our past records. We received over 700 proposals, including breakout sessions, pecha kuchas, and posters. The interest in and demand for creating better and healthier cities for all shows no sign of slowing down, and this conference has been designed to build on this momentum.

We are happy to announce that the early bird registration for this year’s PWPBPP conference is now open! Join us this year in Vancouver, Canada, for an inspiring and informative gathering of passionate professionals and activists alike, working towards a common goal – healthier cities for all – in a city that has been coined as one of the healthiest in the world.

Focusing on current and pressing topics relating to walking and biking in urban environments, every two years the Pro Walk/Pro Bike/Pro Place Conference joins together city planners, transportation engineers, public health professionals, elected officials, community leaders, and professional walking and biking advocates for a common belief that walking and bicycling will create healthier individuals, cohesive neighborhoods, and vibrant communities. This year, the conference will focus on the intersection between health and city building, with a conference theme of “Moving Towards a Healthier World.” The four focus areas within this theme are health, mobility, resilience, and governance .

Streets as Places in Amsterdam | Photo by PPS

Ever since Pro Walk/Pro Bike/Pro Place joined up with PPS in 2012, place has been the central focus of this joint advocacy, emphasizing not just the importance of walking and bicycling in cities for the health of its citizens, but that healthier lives can be created and sustained through the implementation of better streets and neighborhoods. In light of this connection, and the fact that in 2015 was the biggest year in Placemaking yet, PWPBPP will not stand alone this year. Rather, it will be part something bigger — Placemaking Week — the world’s biggest Placemaking event to date! Placemaking Week is a three-part event that will bring together movements, disciplines, and leaders from around the world, and the collective effort will help launch a new model for shaping cities.

Do you believe in the benefits of walking and cycling on local communities? Do you advocate for better and safer streets, and walkable neighborhoods for communities? Do you care about environmentally conscious urban development? Are you an active and passionate Placemaker? If so,  join us in Vancouver in September and support the movement! Help us continue on the path of creating more healthy, mobile, resilient, and well-governed cities for all.
