There have been quite a few interesting developments in New York City this past couple of weeks. The so-called “poor door” was approved for a luxury residential development that contains both low-income housing and at-market apartments, sparking a debate over where the poor’s place really is in New York. The waterfront is a case in point for an argument like this. In Brooklyn and in downtown Manhattan, issues of accessibility have raised the question: just who is the waterfront for? And as for the character of the place - impacted by all of the above - Witold Rybcznski argued against the use of “Starchitects” - in New York City and around the world.
Some good news snuck its way through though with the opening of the first Arterial Slow Zones in several boroughs following the mayor’s Vision Zero initiative. The city-wide reduction of speed from 30 mph to 25 mph will go into effect in October. More than just saving lives, this could also help to attract the car-free, active transit-using, and bike-lane loving Millennials (guilty as charged!). But either way, all of it is moving towards Place - which is apparently the new “American Dream” (Placemaking, anyone?).
The month of August is gearing up to be the calm before the proverbial Placemaking storm around here, with three major conferences in the month of September! If you were thinking of attending Pro Walk/Pro Bike/Pro Place, better hurry - it will be reaching another price deadline on August 15th. In the meantime, you can prepare for the post-conference fall kick off with two internships currently posted in our transportation team, and fall training workshops officially open for registration.
