[...] Context (the size of a site, its location within the city, its present configuration) gives the people who choose to participate in a Placemaking process a universally agreed-upon starting point. But for that raw space to become a place, people have to identify priorities, make decisions, and take action. Involving the intended users of a public space in that process helps the resulting design to be responsive to the community’s needs—including the inherent need of all communities for people to connect with each other. Any organization can pave a plaza, but it’s not a place until people are using it.
This is very enlightening; you’re right public spaces reflect cultural values and it’s a place for revitalizing communities. One should not really undermine the significance of Place Capital not only in the economy but also in the strengthening of ties in the community. In this regard, what are the ways in which social media can contribute to the development of public spaces?

Farmers markets are the fastest growing sector of retail in North America. This is occurring not because of some good financial deal that can be made. The neighbourhood, community farmers' market has become the new 'church.' It is where you go to socialize, share bread with friends, meet new people and make recreational plans for the day/week. It has also become the most reassuring place to purchase unprocessed, and organically grown foods from local farmers. More and more people are waking up to the realities of the industrial food system and the benefits to local economy and the farmers markets are teh best and easiest place to respond.
Re: bicycles.... I just returned from a first time trip to Amsterdam. If you wonder how a population can adapt to bicycle transportation, you need to visit Amsterdam. However, I think the attachment to bikes is not due to government policy. It has to do with design. This is not a car friendly city! Many streets are too narrow for cars traveling in opposing directions. There are also very few big box stores. The city is filled with local merchants, artisans and neighbourhood entrepreneurs. Most car traffic is confined to a few main roads, mostly for traveling in and out of the city. Bicycles will become popular in North America through proper design of neighbourhoods and cities not by legislation
