The first thing I do when visiting other cities is go to the most loved market. I usually learn a bit about the city and its people. In Athens once, I watched an elderly lady dressed head to toe in black bargaining with a lamb vendor. Both were exercising some emotion over the deal. He was shaking a cutlet at her. She was loudly refusing it and pointing to another. Eventually, she slapped his hand hard enough that he dropped the cutlet. She whirled around to find another vendor, presumably one more acquainted with good lamb.

Now THAT'S a foodie! Teach him to give her anything but the very best for her family. I would have given a lot to taste the dinner she cooked that night. Such passion for food. It was marvelous.
