Funny thing about the middle part of the article is that there *IS* an I-695 in DC. It's true that the section between I-66/TR Bridge and the 14th St Bridge (through/near/under the Lincoln Memorial) was never built, but the Southeast Freeway east of the 3rd St Tunnel was built and is now finally being signed as I-695, 40+ years after construction.

Mr Meyers was a strong and active supporter of increased street lighting, bikes and curb cuts, etc. However, most of the council's actions were begun, prior to Meyers service, by the Council's Transportation Committee Chair, Rev. Jerry A. Moore, Jr. For example, GE made a movie about the lighting innovations featuring Moore. The bike improvements - curb cuts, a new bike code and a Lou Stovall poster -- were done at the request of John Volpe, the first Secretary of DOT and pushed by Councilmemberr Polly Shackleton and Council Chair Gilbert Hahn.

To the author and Tedson Meyers. I was in a band that played for an outdoor campaign event in your DC Council race at the corner of 18th & Columbia on a vacant lot. Another neighbor had written your campaign theme song, which we played there. Great to read about your other work. denisjames@verizon.net

This is a story that has been repeated in many cities. Sometimes the results are very different. You might be interested in a photo documentary I did on the building of the "last freeway" to be built in Los Angeles.

Construction of I-105 was halted for 7 years after homeowners, the NAACP, and the Sierra Club filed an injunction to stop it. I photographed the area that was already being cleared during that time and then was asked by the public interest law firm that handled the litigation for the homeowners if I would rephotograph the area after construction resumed. The photo series is called In Our Path and you can see it at: http://inourpath.com
