Safe streets are not only pedestrians’ job
This story reminded me of my British friends who went to Reno to visit some relatives and had to get in the car the cross the road for dinner because the road was filled with speeding cars! While safety programs like the one sponsored by Montgomery County may be useful to immigrants who may not be familiar with our traffic rules, I say that we should continue to put some pressure on our DOTs to build roads that encourage greater awareness of all users of the streets. Our roads have designed out kids, the elderly and bikers – it’s clear that they’ve also designed out average pedestrians who are less well-off and can’t afford cars but still need to go places.
